BOM.K
Born in Paris in the 1970s, Bom.k discovered graffiti as a teenager, as the southern suburb where he grew up covered in tags, chrome and throw ups from the first generation of movement.
Surrounded by a few friends, he is introduced to the mysteries of the spray can on the walls of his neighborhood before being definitively converted to noble art thanks to Bibles as his « Subway Art » and « Spraycan Art ».
Self-taught, he spends the next ten years of his life trying all facets of this emerging discipline, whether on a train, on a wall or in colorful frescoes.
Passionate about drawings since childhood, he gradually lost interest in lettering and typography to deepen a more figurative aspect in his work, studying the anatomy, architecture and the work of some « masters » of painting in general.
After a passage through the south of France, Bom.k returned to live in Paris in 1999 and founded with his acolytes Iso and Kan, the group Da Mental Vaporz then went, wall after wall, pushing the aesthetic limits of Graffiti, addressing innovative themes for the time like madness, life on the outskirts, social exclusion, fear and hate.
With the 2000s, the group opened up to a new generation of painter, welcoming in its ranks Jaws, Gris1, Brusk and Dran, then more recently Sowat, Blo and Lek. Together, the 9 members of the collective will then travel the world – England, Spain, Denmark, Belgium and Australia…. – to participate in many festivals, organize major exhibitions and above all, paint whatever comes their way. Drawing their inspiration from outside the movement, their tastes going towards the works of M.C Escher, H.R Giger or even J.P Witkin, the Da Mental Vaporz forged a name.
Very quickly, Bom.k’s technical virtuosity and his innate sense of composition earned him to appear in numerous publications, his work appearing in magazines and books such as Etapes Graphiques, Graphotism ’and la France d’en bas’ from the Editions Alternatives.
At the same time, since 2005 Bom.k has been developing such demanding and total workshop work than its external productions. Equipped with pencils, spray cans, acrylics and a host of chemicals, he instinctively tackles canvases as large as his frescoes.
Logically, his works do not take long to be spotted by many galleries, in France and abroad – Europe, United States and Asia – which invite him to participate in solo or group exhibitions.
Finally, the release of his book ‘HB Blacktrace’ by Editions Populaires in 2007, finished establishing his international reputation as one of the major names in the post graffiti, illustration and contemporary art scene.
Today, Bom.k lives and works between Paris and the north of France.
